New Guan Xing & Zhang Bao 关兴 & 张苞
General Family's Tiger Sons 将门虎子

Paternal Souls 父魂
New Guan Xing & Zhang Bao can use any two hand cards as an Attack. If they damage another character with an Attack produced by this ability during their turn, they gain "Roar" and "Fighting Saint" until the end of their turn.
Clarification:
  • "Roar" is Zhang Fei's ability. It allows him to Attack as many times as he would like during his turn without restriction.
  • "Fighting Saint" is Guan Yu's ability. It allows him to use any red card as an Attack.
  • New Guan Xing & Zhang Bao can use "Parental Souls" at any time to produce an Attack with two hand cards. They can use it outside of their turn when responding to Duels or Barbarians, but they only gain "Roar" and "Fighting Saint" when they successfully damage a character with an Attack produced by this ability during their turn.
  • The color of the attack produced by "Parental Souls" depends on the two cards used - if they are both of the same color, the resulting attack will have that color. If they are different colors, the attack will be colorless. This works the same way as the Serpent Spear.

 Strengths Weaknesses
  • Much like the original version, New Guan Xing & Zhang Bao are very aggressive and powerful when "Paternal Souls" successfully activates. They have a good chance of finishing off an enemy during their turn if they started with a full hand.
  • The new version of "Paternal Souls" does not require New Guan Xing & Zhang Bao to draw two different colored cards to activate. This greatly reduces the influence of chance on their ability to activate this power.
  • In a pinch, New Guan Xing & Zhang Bao can target an ally with "Paternal Souls" then focus their offensive abilities on their enemies.
  • "Paternal Souls" now has a steep cost for New Guan Xing & Zhang Biao. They must sacrifice two hand cards to attack another character, and the Attack must land. This cost is particularly steep when the Attack is neutralized by an Escape.

Notable Combinations:
  • Liu Bei/Guo Jia/Xu Shu/Chen Gong - These characters can give New Guan Xing & Zhang Bao cards. This will be helpful when they want to activate "Paternal Souls."
  • Xun Yu - Xun Yu's "Eternal Loyalty" can refill New Guan Xing & Zhang Bao's hand. This is always useful for them, but it is most powerful during a turn in which they successfully activate "Paternal Souls." New Guan Xing & Zhang Bao can exhaust their hand then Attack Xun Yu. Xun Yu can then refill them while the effects of "Paternal Souls" are still active.
  • Xiahou Dun/Fa Zheng/Sima Yi/Cai Wen Ji - These characters have retaliatory abilities that are activated on a 'per-instance' basis. This will make it expensive for New Guan Xing & Zhang Bao to Attack them multiple times during their turn.
  • Chen Gong - Chen Gong's "Delayed Wisdom" will prevent New Guan Xing & Zhang Bao from damaging him multiple times in one turn.
  • Lu Meng/Zhen Ji - These characters have an easy time playing Escapes and preventing the initial hit of New Guan Xing & Zhang Bao's "Paternal Souls."
KingWithout having to worry about random chance to activate "Paternal Souls," New Guan Xing & Zhang Bao are slightly better as king than their original counterpart. If they can kill one rebel, they will gain more cards and potentially kill more. That being said, New Guan Xing & Zhang Bao are probably not the best king pick given their lack of defensive options.
LoyalistNew Guan Xing & Zhang Bao are a good loyalist pick. When the time is right, they can kill a rebel during their turn. Because they draw three cards per rebel killed, they will likely be able to perpetuate the cycle.
RebelNew Guan Xing & Zhang Bao can be good rebels. When they direct their talents against the king, they can do a lot of damage in a short amount of time.
SpyNew Guan Xing & Zhang Bao are not a good spy choice. Their power does not help keep them alive for a long period of time and it does not self-perpetuate when they have to kill a loyalist..

Final Remarks:
We initially thought that this version was weaker than the original counterpart, but after using New Guan Xing & Zhang Bao in a few games it quickly became apparent that they are every bit as good, if not better. New Guan Xing & Zhang Bao's "Paternal Souls" sacrifices the offensive power of the original ability for a more reliable activation requirement. Having to use two cards to activate this ability is a steep cost, but New Guan Xing & Zhang Bao can target an ally to ensure that the ability will be activated.
